THE KEY RIGHTS OF A TENANTS

As a tenant in a private rented property, my tenancy agreement (which should be co-signed by me and my landlord before I move in) provides me with a number of rights:

  • Have a written agreement if I have a fixed-term tenancy of more than three years
  • As of 1 June 2019, to not to have to pay certain fees when setting up a new tenancy, under the Tenant Fees Act (commonly referred to as the Tenant Fee Ban).

THE ETIQUETTES OF A WRITTEN TENANCY AGREEMENT

There are some very specific rules to follow in a written tenancy. If I have a written tenancy agreement, then it should be fair and compliant with the law. Many sample tenancy agreements are available online, such as this one from the UK government. If I am doubtful that I haven’t received this from my landlord, then I should ask the landlord immediately. That way, my key rights of tenants will be protected.
