Some of life’s most thrilling moments are also the trickiest.

Negotiation is a relatively tough tactic, no matter what the stage of life it is. Perhaps if I’m selling my home and the new purchaser is harping on one line item. Or, I’m purchasing a home and can’t get the seller to meet me halfway on inspection fixtures. Whether it’s a real estate negotiation or a salary negotiation, it’s critical to keep my head clear, perform my research, and when possible, consult a professional.

In an expert landscape that’s less than equitable, I want every woman to know that when no one offers her a seat, she can pull up her own chair. The keynote of the day is you should wait for a negotiation invitation, and perhaps you’ll be waiting a long time. Here is a few tips to up your real estate negotiating game:

1. Know Your why

Tap into the encouragement behind I ask. When I negotiated on behalf of cricket players, I recognized that I wasn’t just negotiating for more money. I was negotiating a deal that had the potential to change their and their family’s lives. This is necessary because we mostly are scared from portraying our negative image. It is often assumed that asking for money makes one greedy whereas actually money can assist us to attain our goals. The next time I negotiate a raise, I will consider the influence that additional resources could have. Maybe that extra money enables me to enroll my child in the best school, purchase my first luxury home, or go back to school myself. Asking “Why do I want this?” will assist me to find the courage to ask with confidence. I’ll be negotiating not just for cold, hard cash but for the life improvements they’ll bring me.

2. Practice 360° awareness

This indicates putting myself in the other person’s shoes so that I clearly understand their life goals, needs, values, and fears. People tend to look at the world from four different angles: financial, strategic, logistical, and relational. Knowing the negotiator and what they value most will help me adapt the communication style and understand what to figure out. If I’m negotiating on a salary raise with my employer who mostly views the world through a financial mindset, he’ll be focused on results. I have to approach that person with data, logic and will be concise. If my employer is more strategic, I will lay out my vision for how I’ll grow my position. If the employer is relational, he may value how I’ve stepped up as a leader.

3. Build favor columns

I can’t go far in a negotiation if I can’t find common ground. People want to know: Do I adore you? Can you assist me? Do I believe you?

Favor columns enable me to build relationships with people who are difficult to connect with. A favor column is anything that adds value, delights, or assists solve a problem for another person. That can be a present, like a flower bouquet or a book I think they’d enjoy. But it doesn’t require to be. Making an introduction to a prospective customer, assisting their child with an internship search, or simply sending a podcast link they may enjoy is very effective in building favor. It may seem counterintuitive to invest in the relationship with the negotiators, but I’m showing them what the relationship can be.

These real estate negotiation tips all work together to make every woman a better negotiator. Some of the information was generalized and of course, does not apply to all women everywhere, and many of these ideas can be applied to men as well.
