Words to NEVER Use in My Flawless Property Listing

Real estate agents can unintentionally find themselves in hot water. They can get into difficulty when they use dual-meaning words and phrases in their property listing descriptions. It’s worth reminding me that some dual-meaning words and phrases are considered discriminatory. If I use them, it violates the Fair Housing Act and can even put a real estate agent’s job in jeopardy. Note, some words/phrases to never use include:

  • Chinese/Christian/BlockWhite: any words that describes someone’s race, ethnicity or religion.
  • Temples, mosques, churches: any words assuming the buyer is of a specific religion
  • Couples only/without kids: Words that discriminate against persoanl status
  • Retirees/Seniors/Teenagers: Words that discriminate against age groups.

My flawless property listing should appeal to a certain set of buyers, but I should not assume anything about them. If the property is best for families with kids, I can mention how close it is to local parks and good schools. I don’t need to mention that it’s perfect for families with kids. If the home is great for elderly people, I can highlight how accessible it is. Also how close it is to coffee bars, libraries, and grocery stores. For a complete list of words to use (and those to avoid) click here.
